General information

Romano potato variety

The seed potato called “Romano” is a medium-early high-yielding food variety. Its tubers are large in size with a smooth surface, so that they are ideal for sale. This type of potato is recommended for cultivation on the territory of farms and industrial fields. It is easily preserved and transported, as its dense skin reliably protects the pulp of tubers from any damage, fading and helps to preserve the wonderful taste. In this article you will learn about the main characteristics of Romano potatoes, you will also become aware of its origin, and of course, about the characteristics of cultivation, pests and diseases to which it is exposed.

Description and characteristics

Tuber size is average, weight - 70-90 grams, has an oval shape or round-oval. The surface is fairly flat and smooth, aligned in accordance with the size and weight, the color of the skin is light pink, uniform, the eyes are superficial and in a small amount, the flesh is light yellow or cream-colored.

This potato variety is characterized by the possibility of growing it on the territory of a large number of regions of Russia. It is recommended to grow it on the lands of industrial fields and farms.

The plant has a bush upright. The leaves are dark green color of medium size, slightly wavy. On the branches of the bush there is an abundance of leaves, the branches are compact, not spreading, there are large reddish-purple inflorescences, collected in corollas. The berries are small and infrequent. The development of the tops occurs soon enough, and the tubers may linger in development.

The variety is very sensitive to the nutrient components of the soil, and therefore, on poor and infertile soil, there is a strong decrease in yield.

Seed potatoes are not subject to degeneration, and it can be used from year to year without the need for renewal.

For tubers varieties Romano is characterized by excellent taste. The taste is balanced, saturated, without wateriness. From boiled potatoes it is possible to get a tender puree that does not contain lumps. Potatoes are ideal for such types of cooking as frying, baking, stewing. It is also possible to use it in industry: from this kind of delicious chips and slices of fries.

This type of potato is ideal for sales. It is characterized by high yields, and its roots are perfectly preserved for a long time. Up to nine large fruits can be obtained from one bush, that is, up to 800 grams from one bush. There are almost no small root crops. In accordance with the fertility of the soil and the time of harvest, the yield varies from eleven to thirty-two tons per hectare. The maximum, at the end of the harvest period, it can reach thirty-four tons per hectare.

A bit of history

As many probably know, potato varieties from Dutch breeders are quite popular due to high quality. And, considered in this chapter, the variety is just one of those. He was entered in the State Register of Breeding Achievements in Russia in 1994, which gave him the right to the processes of reproduction and selection in the regions of the state. It was zoned in the territories of the following regions: Central, Central Black Earth, Volgo-Vyatsky, South and Far Eastern. Potatoes tolerate drought and excessive heat, but not frost-hardy.

Advantages and disadvantages

The main advantages of the variety are:

  • wonderful taste,
  • excellent presentation
  • low reject rate
  • high yield,
  • long preservation of the crop, even during transportation,
  • thanks to its dense skin, resistant to mechanical damage to tubers,
  • easily responsive to dressing,
  • well tolerate drought,
  • possesses good immunity to a number of pests and diseases.

The disadvantages of the variety include thick peel, although on the one hand it protects from damage and preserves its taste, but on the other hand it interferes with cleaning. The second disadvantage of potatoes is low frost resistance. And finally, the last: he may be prone to diseases such as scab and nematode.

Selection of planting material

As you know, the harvest and taste are determined by the choice of seed potatoes. Before planting potatoes, it must be properly selected and processed.

What rules should guide the selection of planting material?

  1. Prepare the seeds for planting should be in the fall, when we dig the crop. We dig up the most beautiful, dense and spreading bushes, and leave root crops in the hole for drying.
  2. We separate the potatoes for planting, guided by the size and quality. You can not choose damaged or rotten tubers. The size should be with a chicken egg.
  3. Selected seed placed in a warm dry place. Placed in direct sunlight can not be. Next, store in the cellar. It is important not to mix with the rest of the crop.

If you did not know that the tubers for sowing should be prepared in advance, use the method called "peasants".

  1. From the existing crop, you need to separate the whole medium-sized potato. It is important that it does not have any cracks and rot.
  2. Put it in a dry place, dry well. And only after that you can begin to prepare.
  3. Then you should divide them by size. Large, medium and small. And when disembarking one row we plant the same size so that the shoots and the harvest are simultaneous.

Having selected the strongest and most promising bushes, mark them, for example, with a bright ribbon. This is recommended, because it is from these fruits that you can get the best planting material for the coming years.

Tuber preparation

Approximately 2 - 3 weeks before planting potatoes in the ground, lay out, prepared in advance, planting material in a warm and dry place, where direct sunlight does not fall. For drying and germination root crops need a temperature of 18 to 20 degrees.

All this time, the tubers should not be allowed to dry. To provide them with the necessary amount of moisture, spray, periodically, with water.

As a preventive measure against fungal and other diseases, fungicides should be used.

To increase the yield, you can apply ash. Sprinkle the wet potatoes with ashes, and leave to dry for 10 minutes.

Soil preparation

In order to maximize the yield of a variety, it should be grown in the most lighted area.

As for other crops, soil preparation should begin in the fall. Initially, the earth is dug up and lime is added to it (1 cup per 1 square meter). In the spring you need to add a complex mixture.

Planting potatoes

Planting tubers should be made in a well-heated land at the end of the period of threats of spring frost. Favorable temperature for planting - from fifteen to twenty degrees. Under these conditions, shoots appear quickly and at the same time, the yield is high. The ripening period is from 65 to 80 days.

Permissible cutting of large tubers in the implementation of planting, which saves. For cutting, it is recommended to use a sharp knife, which should be periodically dipped into a strong solution of potassium permanganate (in everyday life we call it “manganese”). Cutting should be done before the process of planting, because if you make it in advance, then chopped potatoes can rot.

Potato "Romano" is a mid-early, undemanding to care, tolerates short periods of drought. In moderately temperate lands, watering is not required, and in areas where temperatures are very high in summer and there is little rainfall, irrigation is necessary two or three times a day. It is recommended to spud and weed two or three times over the entire growing period. It will also require a one-time top dressing, and the best option would be to apply complex fertilizers just before planting, after the soil is loosened.

Having selected the strongest and most promising bushes, mark them, for example, with a bright ribbon. This is recommended, because it is from these fruits that you can get the best planting material for the coming years.

From the bushes affected by viruses, roots should not be used for further planting. Seven days before digging the crop, cut the tops. Such an action will allow the tuber to form more dense skin and give it a good presentation. This potato variety is resistant to damage, and no special tools are required to harvest it.

Diseases and pests

The variety Romano is fairly resistant to major diseases. Potatoes are only occasionally affected by viruses, potato cancer. Medium resistant to rhizoctoniosis, but has low protection from potato nematode and common scab. Rarely appears late blight, but, nevertheless, the disease can infect the leaves. It is possible to carry out prophylaxis before planting - to treat with preparations containing copper, and after a certain number of years to change the site for planting. It is recommended that seedlings of potato fields be sown with seeds of legumes, early cabbage, oilseed radish and phacelia.

Harvesting and storage

At the end of the harvest, the potatoes must be dried for three to five days. On sunny days, the drying process can be carried out directly on the furrows, and during bad weather, you can make potatoes under a special shed. The first tubers can be dug at the end of June, and the main cleaning is done at the beginning of September.

Before removing the potatoes for storage, you should select the seed potatoes for planting next year.

After reading the information in this article, for sure, every amateur gardener and farmer will be able to appreciate all the advantages of this type of variety, and, using the above tips on cultivation, will be able to increase the yield of potatoes in their plot.
