What is high oleic oil?

Raw materials for each of them are obtained using traditional breeding methods.
High oleic oil is a product with a high content of oleic monounsaturated acid (80-90%). Saturated fatty acids make up at least 10% of the volume. According to its characteristics, this type of oil can be compared with olive oil, despite the fact that its price is 3-4 times lower. High-fatty oil has a neutral taste, light yellow color (almost transparent) and does not contain trans fats. In the food industry, it has been used for more than 10 years.
Advantages over regular sunflower oil
High oleic oil has significant advantages over conventional, obtained in the traditional way from sunflower seeds:
- The main thing for which this oil is valued is a high content of oleic acid, the amount of which in the composition reaches 90%.
- There is even more oleic acid in high oleic oil than in olive (80-90% versus 71%) and regular sunflower (80-90% versus 35%).
- This product is ideal for frying, unlike most other types of oils. The fact is that it does not form trans fats that are harmful to human health.
- It has a neutral taste. Due to this property, such a product is suitable for people who do not like the taste of unrefined sunflower oil and olive oil.
- Due to the content of polyunsaturated Omega-3-acid, the shelf life of this product is longer than that of other types of vegetable oils.
In general, it can be said that a product with a high content of oleic acid in nutritional value can be put above olive oil, although its cost is an order of magnitude lower.
High oleic oil: benefits and harm to the body

When frying in high oleic oil, much less so-called trans fats are released, which can initiate oncological processes. For these properties, high oleic sunflower oil is a natural analogue of olive oil, at a price several times lower.
It is possible to distinguish high oleic oil from the usual one according to the composition indicated on the package. The content of free fatty acids in it should be no more than 0.05%, palmitic acid - no more than 4%, and oleic acid - not less than 76%. Currently, some companies produce mixtures of high-oleic sunflower oil with cold-pressed olive oil.
Rapeseed oil is high in oleic acid, therefore some manufacturers mix it with regular sunflower oil. But from such a blend more harm than good. In rapeseed oil, together with oleic, contains a large amount of erucic acid, the consumption of which can adversely affect health.
Among other advantages of high-oleic sunflower oil, it should be noted that in the manufacture of margarine from it, energy costs are reduced by 10-15%. It is also highly resistant to oxidation and has a long shelf life of three to four times longer than usual.
High oleic sunflower varieties are of interest not only from the point of view of the valuable component of the diet, but also as raw materials for the production of biodiesel and "green" chemistry. As a renewable resource, they contribute to solving the problems of sustainable development of human civilization.
Situation in the domestic and foreign market
The market for high-oleic sunflower oil appeared just a few years ago, and therefore is in the making phase. And this gives excellent opportunities to enter it with relatively low initial costs and in the future to take a good position as a supplier of raw materials for the food or chemical industry.
The leading factor in increasing the production of high-oleic sunflower oil is the passion for a healthy lifestyle in Western countries, as well as the demand from the chemical and oil industry. The largest global consumers of this type of oil are European processors who have been working in this sector for almost 10 years. In the USA and Europe, the area under high oleic hybrids is constantly increasing. Currently, they account for about 10-15% of the total area occupied by sunflower, having doubled in the last five years. In France, this figure has already exceeded 60%.
At the same time, in Ukraine, high-oleic sunflower is grown on approximately 80 thousand hectares, which corresponds to 2.2% of the area occupied by this crop, and in Russia the similar indicator barely reaches 1% (55 thousand hectares). High oleic sunflower crops are concentrated in the southern regions of Russia: Krasnodar and Stavropol Territories, Rostov and Volgograd Regions.
Surveys have shown that most Russian and Ukrainian agricultural producers know almost nothing about the advantages that high oleic sunflower varieties contain and are not aware of global trends in the demand for sunflower oil made from them. Mainly growing high-oleic sunflower, domestic farmers are engaged in the presence of direct orders from large processing companies exporting sunflower oil or products of its more advanced processing to the west. Among them are Aston, Cargill and WJ grain. Companies have a system of bonuses for high oleic acid content in raw materials and special loan programs.
Most domestic processors of sunflower oil do not yet realize the advantages of high-oleic varieties, and do not understand why they should pay more for this type of raw material.
The production of high oleic oil in the European Union satisfies domestic demand by only 80%, and this value decreases with time, which is accompanied by an increase in imports. In addition, the growth of the income level of the population of India and China is likely to soon lead to the fact that this region will also become a major importer of sunflower oil with a high content of oleic acid.
High oleic sunflower varieties and hybrids
High oleic sunflower was first obtained by Krasnodar scientist K.I. Soldatov in the 1970s (variety Pervenets). The content of oleic acid in its oil was about 70%, but it was notable for its instability and low resistance to diseases. Nevertheless, it is this variety that became the starting material for almost all high-oleic hybrids, including the western selection. Sunflower high-oleic hybrids are products of traditional breeding, in their development the technologies of genetic modification of organisms are not used.
The first hybrid of high-oleic sunflower introduced into the Plant Registry of Ukraine was the Slav bred by the joint efforts of the Institute of Oilseeds of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine and the All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Oilseeds. Behind him, hybrids of the Institute of Plant Industry (Kharkov) - Aeneas, Ant, Darius, Zorepad, Queen and Bohun were entered into the Ukrainian Registry. The content of oleic acid in them reaches 70-75%. The hybrids such as Odor, Romantic, Anthracite and Oliver have been developed by the Selection and Genetic Institute (Odessa). The latter is characterized by a 90% oleic acid content.
Among the varieties of the Russian selection should be noted early ripe Cruise with an oleic acid content of up to 70%. It is resistant to fomopsis, sunflower moth and broomrape. The variety practically does not lose high olein during cross pollination. Besides it, the Hermes hybrid, bred in VNIIMK, is registered and recommended for cultivation.
In Russia, high-oleic sunflower is also grown from foreign-breeding seeds produced by Syngenta, Monsanto and Pioneer. High levels of oleic acid are distinguished by hybrids Marko, Olstaril, Olsavil, NK Ferti, Orasol, PR 64H45. One of the most productive is the mid-season hybrid Tutti from Syngenta. Tests have shown its good drought resistance in the conditions of the Rostov and Volgograd regions.
It should be noted that the close attention of the selection to this direction has been paid only in recent years. In this regard, until recently, high-oleic hybrids did not possess the resistance to broomrape, diseases, pests and adverse environmental conditions, which characterized the best representatives of ordinary varieties. Because of that, many farmers faced with them had a skeptical opinion about the profitability of their cultivation. However, modern hybrids are practically devoid of the noted disadvantages.
The yield of high-oleic hybrids is comparable to that of the best representatives of conventional varieties.
Features of cultivation of high oleic sunflower
The technology of growing high oleic sunflower is almost the same as that used in the cultivation of traditional varieties. Among the special recommendations on the cultivation of high oleic sunflower should be noted:
· Spatial isolation with common varieties. The distance between the fields should be at least 200 m. Surgesing with common varieties can lead to a significant decrease in the level of oleic acid in the crop.
· Mix high oleic and common sunflower seeds during sowing, harvesting, transportation and storage should be avoided.
It is better to sow varieties and trilinear hybrids with higher heterogeneity on low-margin fields. Subject to crop rotation and sufficient soil fertility, it is recommended to use simple hybrids. It should focus on hybrids of domestic breeding, adapted to local conditions. As a rule, they are not inferior to foreign analogues in terms of yield and oleic acid content, but they are more resistant to local diseases and have a more affordable price.
Although the level of oleic acid is primarily determined by the genetic characteristics of the plants, other factors also influence this indicator (weather and soil conditions, growing technology, etc.). Reducing the risk of losses due to adverse weather conditions or diseases and raising profitability allows the simultaneous use of several high-oleic hybrids, differing in speed of maturation.
Because of the features described, the cultivation of high oleic varieties in small farms is difficult. It is much more profitable to do this in large holdings, which have not only significant acreage, but also complexes for the processing of products and established sales channels. In addition, agricultural holdings have the financial potential necessary to cover the possible risks associated with the cultivation of this crop.
Is it worth to grow high oleic sunflower in Russia and Ukraine?
Cultivation of high-oleic sunflower varieties can give a high financial return, especially for relatively large agricultural enterprises. Today it is necessary to focus primarily on Western markets. After all, the majority of domestic consumers are not willing to overpay for "healthy" food. In addition, few of them even know that sunflower oil exists in its biological properties is almost equivalent to olive oil.
Successful development of this direction is possible under the condition of mutual interest and coordination of actions on the part of breeders, agricultural and processing enterprises, as well as consumers of vegetable oil in high oleic acid content.
High oleic sunflower oil
Most consumers, choosing sunflower oil in the store, do not even think about what is included in its composition. And the manufacturers themselves are often in no hurry to reveal all the background for the liquid that is in the bottle. Nevertheless, it is the sunflower variety that greatly influences the composition and nature of the product’s effect on the human body. Of course, high-oleic oils can bring the greatest benefit, that is, those products that were obtained from plants with a high content of oleic acids.
