General information

Is it possible to give hens to laying hens eggshell

In order for the chickens to carry eggs with strong shells, calcium must be present in their daily diet. Special feed for chickens that carry eggs already contains calcium, but this may not be enough and will affect the eggshell. In this case, give food supplements containing calcium and phosphorus - a large shell rock (you can buy it in the store or independently collect it), crushed shells of crustaceans (shrimps, crayfish), crushed chalk, bone meal. Calcium in the required amount is contained in the crushed shell of eggs, which can and should be given to layers. In order for the calcium to completely dissolve in the chicken esophagus, the eggshell must be ground to a state of flour.

Bait eggshell can be done at home:

  • thoroughly clean (wash) the shell from external contamination and protein,
  • clean the shell from the film,
  • boil in water for 2 minutes
  • drain the water
  • lay out on the napkin the shell and leave for 3 hours,
  • grind dried up shell in a coffee grinder.

Additional feed is placed in an accessible place for layers. It can be added to the main feed, poured into a separate container or scattered on the territory of the poultry walking. The bird finds the nutrients it needs and selects them from the ground. To calcium, you can add vitamins that are contained in the nettle and alfalfa.

Can the hens be given eggshells?

Properly prepared eggshell will be equally useful for both young and laying hens, because it has just a lot of useful properties. The main ones include the following:

  • the shell of an egg is a storehouse of micro and macronutrients, among which magnesium is in the first place, followed by another 30 easily digestible minerals,
  • along with the shell, a large amount of calcium gets into the bird's body, with the assimilation of which there are absolutely no problems,
  • with regular consumption improves the appearance of birds, claws and beak strengthened,
  • new eggshell becomes much thicker, which means that birds will not be able to accidentally crush them,
  • when feeding young chickens and grown chickens, one does not need to worry about the strength of their bone system, as well as the possibility of developing rickets.

How to give eggs to the hens

Most of the calcium is spent from the body of the laying hens, as it is needed to build the eggshells shell. To compensate for the loss of one hen, 3.5 g of a substance per day is sufficient, while for chickens or males, this value ranges from 1.1 to 1.3 g. In percentage terms, the share of eggshell (as well as other sources of calcium) should be about 5% of the total amount of feed given to the bird.

Of course, before using it, it is necessary to prepare it properly, rinsing well and calcining in the oven for about five minutes at a temperature of 100 ° C. Dried shells are crushed to a state of flour (a coffee grinder can be used), and then added to the food produced by the birds, stirring well. As an alternative, you can simply pour the dressing in a separate container so that the birds themselves take as many nutrients as their bodies require.

Contraindications and harm

An excess of calcium in the body is just as undesirable as its shortage, therefore, when giving crushed egg shells to chickens, it is worth adhering to this norm. Excessive concentration of this element in the avian organism can provoke a violation of the passage of nerve impulses in muscle fibers or the appearance of stones in individual organs. Therefore, when using the shell will have to limit the intake of calcium from other sources.

What else can feed chickens

Chickens can eat almost all the food debris from your table, but to avoid disturbances in the digestion of birds, you need to know what and how much to use for food. Consider the most popular options for such food.

Potatoes will be very appropriate in the diet of chickens, as they quickly saturate their bodies and replenish their fiber reserves. In addition, this product can be mixed with any feed, because in any kind of bird it is excellent to eat it. The only thing that should be taken into account when issuing potatoes - its appearance: the raw product is not only undesirable, but can be dangerous to the health of birds. The fact is that in the subcutaneous space of the root contains a large amount of toxic substance solanine, destroyed only under the influence of high temperatures. Consequently, boil the potatoes on the fire, you exclude the possibility of poisoning the bird.Boiled potatoes will be an excellent addition to grain mixtures, green grass or wet mash, and as for the rate of issue, it all depends on the age of the bird: three-week chickens are given 60-100 g of potatoes per day, and a little later they bring it to 200 g on 1 adult bird. However, this does not mean that chickens should eat potatoes every day, two or three times a week is enough.

Beans - an excellent source of protein, which significantly improves the quality of eggs, and the health of the bird itself. However, not all birds agree to eat it raw, so before issuing it is better to boil it. The cooking process is simple and involves a half-hour soaking and subsequent cooking over low heat for the same time. Boiled product is much easier to digest avian body and does not cause heaviness in the stomach. Raw beans give only chopped, preferably processed into flour. With regard to the rate of issue, it can be ration ration and issued several times a day, 1-2 times a week. Like potatoes, boiled beans can be mixed with mash beans, added to cereal mixtures or put in a poultry house in a separate vessel.

Fish and fish products can be called a kind of chicken delicacy, which birds eat with pleasure. However, Considering the presence of a large number of bones in it, it is advisable to boil it before issuing, until all hard components are completely softened.

Fish contains a large amount of phosphorus and calcium, which have a positive effect on the bone system of the birds and the strength of the eggshell. However, the frequency of issuing "fish dishes" should not exceed 1–2 times a week, using 100–150 g of minced fish mixed with feed. This amount can be given at a time, and can be divided into several feedings during the day.

Cabbage leaves - one of the favorite types of food for domestic chickens. They eat them well in a crushed form, and gradually pecking the head suspended in the house. In addition, the vegetable can be issued feathery and in pickled form, the main thing is to pre-rinse it and squeeze out, eliminating excess salt. Cabbage hides such useful elements as potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron, and also vitamins A, C, K. During fermentation of sauerkraut, lactic acid useful for the bird's stomach appears, significantly improving digestive processes. Chopped cabbage leaves can be added to the mash (about 100-150 g per 1 kg) or simply hang the heads of the house and wait until the hens themselves bite off the leaves, reaching the head of the cab.

Only a varied and optimally balanced diet can guarantee good health and high productivity of your birds, so both egg shells, cabbage, potatoes, and beans in certain quantities can and should be fed to the chickens.

The reason - food

Layer food should be rich in calcium and vitamins. It is necessary to select high-quality and balanced feed for laying chickens.

Knowing that the eggshell is a source of calcium, some owners in large quantities give it to chickens, as a result of which the hens acquire the habit of eating the shells as a complete feed and perceive their eggs as much as the feed. Before feeding eggshells to chickens, they should be crushed thoroughly and baked in an oven to “discourage” her taste and smell.

Do not buy food additives and grains from questionable manufacturers. It is better to use the proven diet for centuries:

  1. bone flour,
  2. shell rock
  3. calcium gluconate,
  4. slaked lime.

Feed must contain a sufficient dose of calcium and vitamin B. Of no small importance is the phosphorus content, it has a beneficial effect on the strength of the bones of chickens and egg shells.

The diet of chickens should sufficiently include:

  • soy protein
  • raw fats,
  • vitamins
  • calcium, phosphorus, iron, zinc, cobalt, copper, manganese and iodine.

A bird in the laying period requires at least 5-7 grams of protein per day. You can try to feed the bird with liquid cow's milk for several days.

It is not recommended to feed the hens exclusively for pasture.

Not bad for solving the problem of compound feed PK-1. This mixture contains vitamin supplements B1, B2, B4, B5, B6, B12. The feed is enriched with meat and bone meal with high calcium content.

The reason - a small pen, “not that” nest

If there are several chickens in one nest, or the nests are on the floor and there is little litter in them - the likelihood of eggs being crushed is high. If the egg shell is accidentally broken, in this case, the chicken will definitely eat it. Such is its physiology. A crushed egg any chicken immediately pecks.

With a high density of poultry, it is good to grow individuals for meat. For egg-bearing breeds of birds, the presence of free-range is necessary.

Habit eating eggs can occur in laying hens with too bright light in the hen house. Chickens are most relaxed with blue color lighting.

The task of the farmer is to create the most comfortable nest for the hen. Chickens during the egg-laying period prefer solitude. The remaining inhabitants of the house should not disturb the hens. Not bad, if the chicken 2 times a day go for a walk in the open space.

You should collect laid eggs as often as possible. It is desirable - more than once a day.

You can equip the nests with holes for the passage of eggs in the tray under the nest. Birds won't get him here.

Also, the change in diet and feeding regime, changes in temperature, humidity and light intensity, replanting into the poultry house affect the negative behavior of the hens.

The reason - the shell as an additive

If, as an additive containing calcium, egg shells are used, the hens get used to its taste and smell. It is almost impossible to teach a bird to distinguish between a food additive and its own egg-laying.

If there is a need to feed chickens with calcium, it is better to add shell rock, small pebbles, chalk to the birds ’diet.

If the shell is accidentally broken, then the remnants should be removed quickly and carefully. Chickens should not even taste the eggs

The reason - the culprit in the chicken coop

Hens quickly remember the behavior of their girlfriends. If one member of the pack eats its own or steals other people's eggs, this effect may become widespread.

What if such a rascal started up in your house? Try to calculate the pest. A bird addicted to eating eggs will always be near nests. Such an individual must be immediately isolated from the rest of the population. A bad example is contagious.

You can use the models. Table tennis balls are good for this. In combination with a diet rich in calcium, the bad habit of kuru can be weaned. As a "trick" well serves the taut salty dough, molded in the shape of an oval.

A more radical old-fashioned method is also known - the culprit is cut or grind off the tip of the beak and cauterizes it with hot iron. Some poultry farmers today even debick the birds, that is, pruning the beak. The chicken is deliberately deprived of the sharp part of the beak so that it cannot peck eggs and damage its fellows. There are breeds of chickens whose aggressiveness is laid at the genetic level. In this case, debicking is necessary.

Although, sometimes it is enough to create a calm environment in the nests, to provide chickens with normal nutrition, and the problem will disappear by itself.
